What Precisely are Dedicated Servers?

When we speak of hosting web servers, there are three major categories - hosting servers, VPS (virtual servers) and dedicated packages. Shared web hosting servers accommodate multiple clients and thus the resources per web hosting account are restricted, VPS offer more server configuration freedom, but also affect other virtual hosting servers on the hardware node if utilized unwisely, and dedicated servers offer you the possibility to perform everything you like without meddling with anyone else.

Why would you need a dedicated servers?

Dedicated servers are usually much more expensive than shared servers or virtual private hosting servers. Why would anyone, then, use them? The explanation is very simple. If your firm has a heavy resource-swallowing web portal, or just has very exact server configuration requirements, the right choice is a dedicated servers. For someone who is inclined to invest in safety and reliability, the higher price is not an issue. You have full root privileges and can utilize 100% of the web hosting server's system resources without anyone else sharing these resources and intervening with your sites.

Hardware specifications

The majority of hosting vendors, including us at G-STARTUP, provide several hardware architectures you can choose from based on your demands. The hardware architectures include different types of microprocessors, a different number of cores, different RAM and server disk drive sizes and different bandwidth quotas. You can select a hosting CP, which is a useful software tool if you want to utilize the dedicated servers for hosting purposes solely and choose not to use a Secure Shell client for all the changes you will be making. We offer three kinds of hosting Control Panel software - Hepsia, DirectAdmin and cPanel.

The Control Panel of your choice

If you are a self-confident Linux user (our web hosting servers are powered by Linux or other Unix-based Operating Systems), you could manage your dedicated packages via a Secure Shell terminal exclusively. That, however, could be awkward, especially if you wish to grant root privileges to somebody else who has less technical abilities than yourself. This is why having hosting Control Panel software installed is a bright idea. The Hepsia hosting CP user interface that we offer does not include full server root privileges and is mostly suitable for somebody who owns many sites that absorb lots of system resources, but wants to manage the web sites, databases and mailboxes through an easy-to-use Control Panel. The DirectAdmin and cPanel hosting Control Panels, on the other hand, grant root access and have three levels of access - root, reseller and user. If you plan to resell hosting accounts rather than using the dedicated servers solely for yourself, you should choose one of these two.

Web server monitoring and backup services

Last but not least, there is the matter of monitoring the dedicated servers and of backing it up. In the event of a predicament with your web server, like an unresponsive Apache or an outage, it is useful to have some kind of monitoring system activated. Here at G-STARTUP the system administrators monitor all dedicated servers for ping timeouts, and, if you have a Managed Services package, they monitor the individual services on the dedicated servers too. Backups are also an additional feature - the web hosting vendor offers you data backups on our own backup web servers. You could pick a type of RAID that would allow you to save the very same data on two disk drives as a precaution in the event of a server hard disk drive failure, or in case someone whom you have given root privileges deletes something unintentionally.
